Whiplash Injury of the Cervical Spine

Definition: a whiplash injury of the neck (cervical spine) involves a sprain/ strain of the soft tissue structures that surround the cervical spine. In some cases, whiplash injuries may be complicated by fractures or dislocations.

Are you experiencing neck and shoulder pain after recently being involved in a car accident?

Typical Signs/ Symptoms

The pain you experience can either be immediately after an accident or even 24hours to weeks after trauma. Which is why it’s important to seek medical help as soon as possible so you can be monitored carefully.

The pain may be located in the neck, shoulders and/or scapular region. Pain can be aggravated by moving your neck to the forwards, side, extended back or rotation of the spine. You might even experience radiating pain/ tingles or numbness down the arms to your hands.

 

Signs that you are POORLY recovering:

1.    Upper limb numbness and pain
2.    Sharpness with neck extension
3.    Need for the use of a cervical collar for over 12 weeks
4.    Anterior head carriage
