Rocktape / Kinesiology Tape - why we use it! - Pro Chiropractic - Camberwell, Melbourne
We utilise Kinesiology/ Rocktape to decrease pain, assist in reducing swelling and bruising, provide functional support and to allow full range of movement. Kinesiology tape is elastic and much different to rigid taping that most people are familiar with. The primary goal for rigid taping is to keep a joint “immobile” or “fixed” i.e. ankle taping to prevent rolling. The purpose of kinesio tape being elastic is to almost cause the skin to wrinkle and lift to decompress the tissue immediately below the skin. The idea behind this is to help reduce healing time by: 1. Improve blood and lymphatic flow 2. Improve the movement (slide and glide) between the tissue layers 3. Decrease pain by altering the perception of pain 4. Improve body awareness

What does Kinesiology Tape do?

Kinesiology tape is elastic and much different to rigid taping that most people are familiar with. The primary goal for rigid taping is to keep a joint “immobile” or “fixed” i.e. ankle taping to prevent rolling.

The purpose of kinesio tape being elastic is to almost cause the skin to wrinkle and lift to decompress the tissue immediately below the skin. The idea behind this is to help reduce healing time by:

1.    Improve blood and lymphatic flow
2.   Improve the movement (slide and glide) between the tissue layers
3.   Decrease pain by altering the perception of pain
4.   Improve body awareness

Benefits of Kinesiology Tape

  • Aid to decrease pain
  • Assists to reduce swelling and bruising
  • Provides functional support
  • Allows full range of movement (does not restrict movement like rigid tape)
  • Water resistant –can be worn for approx 3-5 days

At Pro Chiropractic Camberwell we utilise this effect of the tape to help decrease swelling and bruising in acute injuries, and this helps reduce healing times.
